Around Land Art

5/4/12

In the photographs of Lee Eunyeol, the stars have fallen to the ground. The celestial lights find shelter in the crevices of the cracked earth, they nestle together forming hay stacks in the farmlands, they cling to wildflowers beside a steam. The Korean photographer/installation artist is currently showing this work at the Gana Art Space in Seoul, Korea.

Explaining his work, Eunyeol says, “Starry night expresses private spaces given by night and various emotions that are not able to be defined and described in the space. I’ve chosen analogue type for the expression which attempts to install electric bulbs in an objet to be expressed using back space of night by taking advantage of huge studio. There are two spaces in photographs. One is a space before electric bulbs of familiar landscape are installed and the other is a space after electric bulbs expressed by dispersing personal emotion are installed. Unified light from these two spaces generates a mysterious landscape.

German artist Cornelia Konrads builds site-specific installations in public spaces around the world which challenge our perceptions of gravity and time. Using materials like rocks and branches, the artist is most well-known for creating stacked objects which appear to be in the midst of a skyward ascension or a downward fall. Konrads says, “I like to challenge, what is supposed to be ‘reliable’ about reality: the laws of gravity, the solidity of walls or the ground under our feet… my installations can be seen as a filmstill, pointing backwards and forwards both temporally and spatially―an interim state, reflecting my idea of transience, passage and transformation.
